Do you have VDP or some other backup application that runs which can back up the VCSA at the .vmdk level?

We currently use Veeam 8.x for all of our virtual backups.

Unable to pair sites

$

Hello, I am working with vCenter6 and vSphere replication 6.1and having an issue pairing the sites.

My environment:

VMware ESXi, 6.0.0, 2494585
vCenter 6.0.0 3018523

vSphere replication 6.1.0.10819

Both sites use the same platform services controller called PSC.itdemoguy.ca.  When I attempt to pair from either site I get the same error after logging into the platform services controller stating that the token expiration date occurs in the past.  The the time is correct on the local PC (shown) and I believe it's also correct on my Platform Services Controller (which is set to sync off the ESXi host).  They appear to be using different time zones, but I don't see why that would be an issue.

Any thoughts on what could be causing the problem or what I could try next?

Re: Port 902 not listening on TCP

Interesting.  According to CommVault Tech Support as of yesterday TCP 902 is a manditory / must have port open.  Even says it in the logs....

Well....the error that CommVault sends in the email is: Failure Reason: Failed to backup all the virtual machines. Please check event viewer for individual virtual machine failure message.

The Job, when you go look at it in the event details it gives:  Unable to open the disk(s) for virtual machine [xxxxxx].  Please ensure the following: 1) the proxy is able to communicate with the ESX host and resolve the ESX host address  2) the correct transport mode has been selected  3) the disk types configured to the virtual machine are supported.

Contacting CommVault support and looking in the detailed logs, they show that our VC is Actively Refusing connections over TCP 902:

From CommVault Support Case Notes:

-Reviewed VSBKP and VIXDISKLIB Logs. We were seeing Failed to open disk error messages for the operation.
-Noting in VIXDISKLIB, there was NBD_ERR_CONNECT error messages.
*Via CVPING, checked out to VCenter connection over port 902, connection noted was Actively Refused.

Re: Appstacks not attached

I would try a couple things.

  • First, rule out any AD by using direct AppStack entitlement for a subset of your userbase. Not sure why it would work for some and not others, but hey, worth ruling the AD group delivery out.
  • Also, I would try implementing mount on host. If there is any breakdown in communication between the AppVolume brokers and vCenter then the Appstack won't get mounted. It's a best practice because it removes vCenter from the critical path of application delivery, plus it's faster, and in my opinion, more reliable.

From Known Issues section of the App Volumes 2.9 Release Notes:

"When establishing concurrent connections from more than 1700 VDI desktops in multiple virtual centers to the AppVolumes Manager, Writable Volumes and AppStacks fail to attach randomly from some VDI sessions."

Methinks you might be experiencing the same issue, just with less desktops. Lack of response from support would indicate that as well. Give those two things a try. Keep us posted too please on the status of your case.

Exiting a VMware Workstation console while running WinPE from pxe and cannot get back in

I am running Windows 7 SP1 Pro 64 bit with 32GB of ram. 3.8GHz quad core AMD A10-5800B.

VMWare Workstation 11.1.0 Build 2496824

I am testing deploying machines from SCCM. During this process is downloads a Windows PE image and goes through the installation process. If I release the mouse from the console with CTRL-Alt or if I move the mouse out of the window, I cannot access the console again. This seems to be on all VMWare Workstation no matter the configuration. But the one I am working with at the moment is:

1 Proc 1 Core

Virtualization engine is Automatic. I have check Virtualize Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI and Virtualize CPU performance counter. Both of there were not checked before this and I still have the issue with both settings.

8GB ram

100GB HDD as SCSI 0:0

Not sure what else I should include. I read something about Display Fusion causing issues but with DF off or with Force Processor Affinity (all CPUs) enabled or disabled.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

Charles

Use a two tiered approach.  Use the local backup to backup the database onto the appliance itself, and then have Veeam come in and do a backup of the entire VM (or incremental).  If you have to restore based on a corrupt database, you should be able to use the local.  If the whole VM is down, you can restore the entire VM (or just the database if Veeam is capable of cracking open the .vmdk and doing file level restores like Netbackup).

Failed to detach lun

$

During the unmount operation of VMFS datastore we perform following steps.

  • UNmount the vmfs volume (UnmountVMFSVolume())
  • Detech the scsi lun. (DetachSsciLun())

Detach scsi lun operation is getting failed with “cannot change host configuration” with following error in hostd and vmkernel logs.

This is very critical issue for us.

Re: getting image of a live linux system

Hi,

I'm talking about Centos. I can't find instructions which doesn't require a larger disk on the host. The instructions I find are using "dd" which needs 100GB disk space in another partition.

Unfortunately I don't have an unused partition to take dd image of the system.

Also couldn't  find in the converter forum.

What keywords should I use ?

Thanks.

That is one approach that will work.

In the past we have avoided stunning our VC as it is disruptive to any active tasks (have seen some weird results but have not tested this on the 6.x platform).

I will do some tests to see how this works out.

Thanks

If it's possible you can use group policies to set the specific permissions.

I Have the exact same problem here. The only difference is a somewhat newer kernel

Did you by any chance found a problem on the issue?

My macBook "freezes" routinely.  "Command+Alt"+<esc> does not work.  I have to do a hard shut down.  Saw a post that 3.5 was in Beta for compatibility with 10.11.  Does anyone have any insights into this issue?

Re: Failed to detach lun

Check to see if you have other storage devices that are detached but not permanently removed.

If you want the device to permanently decommission from an ESXi host, manually remove the NAA entries from the host configuration:

  1. To list the permanently detached devices, run this command:

    # esxcli storage core device detached list

    You see output similar to:

    Device UID                            State
    ------------------------------------  -----
    naa.50060160c46036df50060160c46036df  off
    naa.6006016094602800c8e3e1c5d3c8e011  off

  2. To permanently remove the device configuration information from the system, run this command:

    # esxcli storage core device detached remove -d NAA_ID

    For example:

    # esxcli storage core device detached remove -d naa.50060160c46036df50060160c46036df

I did this a couple of times and it worked perfectly. If something doesn't work as expected you can always go back to the source VM.
